The osteotomy guide and surgical plans printed by Shining 3D iSLA-650 3D printer improve surgical accuracy and efficiency

Shining 3D's industrial-grade iSLA-650 3D printer has been used to print out the osteotomy guide and surgical plans to improve surgical accuracy and shorten the operation time.

 

Customer Profile
A company based in Wuhan that mainly engages in industrial product design and industrial 3D printing intelligent manufacturing. Since 2013, the company has carried out 3D printing and multi-field application projects. In the medical field, the company has also signed strategic partnership agreements with a number of domestic Grade III Class A hospitals. The cooperative hospitals include: Beijing Anzhen Hospital of Capital Medical University, Wuhan Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan Union Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Hubei General Hospital, Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital, Wuhan Children’s Hospital, The Central Hospital of Wuhan, and The Fourth Hospital of Wuhan (Wuhan Puai Hospital); now the company has established a depth cooperation in a new mode with Henan Province, Sichuan Province and Guizhou Province.

 

 

Background:
The patient is a young man from Henan Province, his femur became deformed since he got fractured during his childhood which had not been treated in time. This resulted in his right bowleg and walking like a duck. More seriously, if his symptoms were not treated promptly there was a high possibility that his joints would be no longer useful.

 

Surgical plans:
After analyzing the case, Professor Ye Shunan and Dr. Zhang Bo of the Wuhan Union Orthopaedic Hospital were ready to do the joint surgery removing part of his femur. Traditionally, the surgeon has to calculate the angle at which the removal will be performed before the surgery. During the surgery, two guide pins will be used to mark out the osteotomy angle before the removal is conducted. However, this method has a high chance of errors that in turn may affect the quality of the surgery.

 

Hence, the Wuhan Union Orthopaedic Hospital who had applied 3D technology experience before, decided to bring in 3D printing technology again in this operation.

 

Printing of the osteotomy guide and model:
From the DIACOM scan data obtained through the CT scan, the staff from the company located in Wuhan was able to get the 3D data of the patient's femur. Based on the data, he then created the osteotomy guide based. After building all 3D models, the staff printed the osteotomy model and the guide through Shining3D's industrial grade iSLA-650 printer, which used around 320 grams of the raw material, took around six hours to complete.

Surgery Rehearsals:
Physicians at the Wuhan Union Orthopaedic Hospital began their surgery rehearsals using the osteotomy guide and femur model. Through the rehearsal, they familiarized themselves with the surgical process and were able to predict some of the possible risks that might crop up during the surgery.

The successful completion of the operation:
Following the surgery rehearsal and surgery prep, the physicians performed the operation on the patient using the osteotomy guide. As the physicians had already familiarized themselves with the surgical process and the guide, they were able to perform the osteotomy quickly and accurately.


Finally, with the aid of 3D printing technologies, a surgical plan that would have usually taken half a day to complete was successfully completed in just over an hour. The patient was able to walk using a crutch the next day and soon left the hospital.
