As the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympics is drawing near, the organizing committee has announced that the Hangzhou-based company Shining 3D Tech will be given the exclusive rights to produce its mascot 'Lele' for commercial purposes. Mascot 'Lele' is a multi-coloured pebble, and all of its different colours (yellow, blue, red and green) all represent different personalities. Both SLA and FDM 3D printing techniques have been used by Shining 3D Tech to produce the Nanjing mascot, each for different purposes. Its multi-coloured appearance was painted on after printing.
In total, more than 30 different models of the mascot have been made, and each of those represent "Lele" in a different sporting event. The following information about the character has been released:
English Name: NANJINGLele
Chinese Name: 砳砳
Nick Name: 石石(small stone)
Birthday: 20th November
Race: Rain Flower pebble
Chinese Zodiac: Dragon
Blood Type: Type O
Name Origin: The left part "石"(stone) in the Chinese name represents the rain flower pebble, while the right part "石"(stone) in the Chinese name signifies the city Nanjing – the city of stone. And when the character of the rain flower pebble meets with Nanjing, the cheerful sound 'le' occurs.
Furthermore, the team behind the EinStart Desktop 3D Printer have released six of the different 'Lele' models onto Thingiverse: included are the basic model, as well as the Table Tennis, Boxing, Ruby and Taekwondo 'Lele's. Anyone with access to a 3D printer can now easily print their own personal mascot for the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympics.
